This is bizarrely plausible...

Saw this film the other night. And MAN is it good. It's been a while since I've felt so thrilled while watching a movie - everyone was so well cast. And the music! I've been driving my kids nuts playing the soundtrack every chance I get. I hope it gets blasted out of the Oscar ballpark on February 22nd. It deserves it.

I didn't think much about the movie til I saw it sweep the Golden Globes -- needless to say, it didn't play in our little local theater! Is it suitable for kids under 12?

I'll have to check the library for the soundtrack too...

Thanks for the reminder!

Gee, I don't know. It opens with a torture scene, and there is a fair bit of semi-disturbing violence. It's not graphically gory, but IMO it might be a bit much for anyone under 12.

We rented The Dark Knight over the Christmas holidays, and I was HORRIFIED at the violence and dark mood of that film, yet it only got a PG13. I nearly fell off my high horse at that, I tell you. I'm sure they've given this film a Restricted - but I'm not actually sure - I was too busy being fascinated by all the music. I have a weakness for that Bollywood stuff.

I'm very curious to watch this. I read in the Globe and Mail (i think that's where it was) that some people in India felt it was a bit stereotyped and didn't show the progress made in the country. But I'm still curious...

Oh well, that doesn't surprise me in the least. The movie is about poverty, slums, child prostitution, beggars, crime lords and torture - hard to paint any of that in a positive light. And there's probably a little of the "How can a non-Indian possibly make a movie about India?" in there, too. I'd ignore them.

I thought it made India look like a fascinating, gorgeous, complex place I'd visit in a heartbeat. Plus, the actors are awesome and so quirky. You'd never get THAT in Hollywood.

Thanks for the recommendation -- I keep hearing about this film. Maybe if we ever get a date night this would be a good one!

I'm glad to hear that you liked it. My husband and I definitely want to see it, though we'll probably have to wait for the dvd.
